The British athletes competing at the US Open in Minnesota demonstrated promise on the second day, but just missed out on securing medals.

Joe Roebuck swam a strong race in the 400m IM with a time of 4:18.59 putting him just 0.15 seconds behind American bronze medallist Ale Vanderkaay. Gold and silver also went to the American team, with Tyler Clary taking gold in 4:17.02 and Clark Burckle claiming silver with a time of 4:18.40.

Great things were expected when Stephanie Proud qualified first for the 400m IM after setting a two second lifetime best, but her race time of 4:46.93 put her in fifth position, with Americans storming through to take gold, silver and bronze. Ava Ohlgren’s time of 4:43.30 secured her gold, Lyndsa De Paul took silver in 4:45.40 and bronze went to Andie Taylor who went 4:46.13.

Proud also qualified for the 200m Backstroke, but her time of 2:11.09 put her 0.78 seconds behind American Morgan Scroggy who stole bronze. The victorious Americans again took all three medals, with gold going to Hayley McGregory in 2:08.42 and Kristen Heiss taking silver with a time of 2:09.99.

Proud commented “I’m very pleased with the way I’m swimming at the meet. To swim 4.46.93 in the 400m IM and then follow this with a 2.11.09 in the 200m Backstroke shows I’m in good shape.”

In the men’s 100m Freestyle Charles Turner’s time of 50.09, although just 0.21 seconds behind American bronze medallist Scott Robison, landed him in sixth position. Michael Klueh of America secured gold in 49.54 and silver went to America’s William Copeland with a time of 49.85.

In the 4x100m relay both the men and women’s teams finished in sixth position. The women’s quartet of Terri Dunning, Georgia Holderness, Katy Sexton and Stephanie Proud completed the race in 3:48.23, with American teams taking the medal positions. Tucson Ford Deal-AZ took gold in 3:44.70, silver went to Longhorn Aquatic-ST silver with a time of 3:44.77 and Dallas Mustangs-NT went 3:47.64, securing the bronze.

The men’s foursome of Ian Hulme, Matt Clay, Joe Roebuck and Charles Turner went 3:25.71, but again the strong Americans teams took all three places. Gold went to Longhorn Aquatic-ST in 3:19.68 Club Wolverine-MI took silver with a time of 3:20.60 and Minnesota Aquati-MN claimed bronze in 3:23.16.

Head coach Ian Armiger said “The team has travelled and responded well to the strength and depth of swimming that can only be found in the USA. Over the first two days we’ve set a number of PB’s and placed well in several finals.”

PARALYMPIANS PERFORM 31 Jul 2008
Swimming in Sheffield at the asa Championships, paralympians Sean Fraser (Warrender) and Elizabeth Simpkin (Southport) showed their promise breaking British and European records.

Swimming in Sheffield at the asa Championships, paralympians Sean Fraser (Warrender) and Elizabeth Simpkin (Southport) showed their promise with Fraser breaking the S9 British record in the men’s 50m freestyle and Simpkin breaking the S9 British and European record in a very closely fought women’s 100m butterfly.

Thirteen year old Simpkin, whose first major international will be the Paralympic Games in Beijing, was pushed by her Great Britain teammates Claire Cashmore, S9 of Kelly College and Stephanie Millward, also S9 of Swim Swansea. She finished with a strong last 50m to win in 1:13.21. “I went as hard as I could and it worked out” Noting that she was still in heavy training Simpkin continued “its scary to break the records when I’m in this heavy phase of training”.

Her sights set on the Paralympics in 39 days time, with a smile on her face, Simpkin said “I have goals but I’m keeping them a secret.”

Tim Reddish, National Performance Director for disability swimming, commented on Fraser’s swim, “it’s a move in the right direction and shows that his training is on schedule. His performance in the 400m freestyle yesterday and 50m freestyle today are good indicators that he is building his endurance capacity from the longer event whilst maintaining speed over the shorter distance. Concluding Reddish said “it was a positive swim and we look forward to seeing his performance in the 100m backstroke.”

DOUBLE FOR KATE 30 Jul 2008

Winning her second National title, England talent programme and AASE (Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence) student Kate Hutchinson (City of Leeds) came from behind to record a convincing win in the girls 16/17 years 200m breaststroke in 2:36.86 . Kate’s mother, Lynn, was ecstatic “she has done fantastic having missed so much training this year due to illness and exams. We actually questioned whether to come to the Championships. I can’t believe we even thought about not coming now. Its absolutely wonderful, she really wanted it,” Kate is training in the new 50 metre facility in Leeds, the ‘John Charles Centre’ but her mum added some insight saying that “she sometimes says she misses the old pool and the cockroaches!”

The men’s 15/16 years 1500m freestyle saw a fantastic swim by Tom Allen from Swim Flint. Like his idol, David Davies, Allen led from the start “I wanted to go out fast then the plan was just to hang on”. Despite winning by 30 metres from his nearest competitor, Allen described the race as harder than he expected “I was hoping for more of a personal best (pb) but I’m happy that I won.” Allen was unable to compete in the National Championships last year due to sustaining a broken foot in a car accident, thankfully the injury has now healed which was evident from the power he was producing from his kick which brought him home in 15:43.25.

In the older age group, the men’s 17/18 years 1500m freestyle, James Gibson (Manchester Aquatics) won his first National title with an evenly paced swim, finishing strongly in 16:01.16.“I swam a 12 second pb but I had wanted to go under 16 mins which I just missed out on, it still feels brilliant though.” Commented Gibson.

Birthday girl, Ann Morris (Derventio XL) won her first National title in the girl’s 14/15 years 400m freestyle, afterwards saying, “It was amazing to win the race and win on my birthday too” Morris won in 4:18.70 with Ellie Faulkner (City of Sheffield) finishing in 4:19.87.

There was a nail biting finish in the girl’s 16/17 years 400m freestyle and men’s 15/16 years 100m backstroke. In the girl’s event Megan Gilchrist (Edinburgh) touched ahead of Lauren Collins (City of Birmingham) finishing in 4:15.76 with Collins finishing in 4:15.81. Surprised at her time Gilchrist said “I had decided to swim my own race, in the last 50m I put my head down and just went, I knew it was close and didn’t know for sure that I’d won.”

In the men’s 15/16 years 100m backstroke the top five swimmers finished within one second of each other. David Gregory (Plymouth Leander) touched first and in doing so broke the British record in a time of 58.21. “I didn’t know that I was on British record pace until the semi-final when I was only 0.2 seconds out” said Gregory. Working at full capacity in the final, he put everything he had into the race and it paid off.

“I knew I had a chance, I gave it everything, it was such a shock to see my name up there [on the scoreboard]” said an exhausted but happy Andrew Donaldson from Scottish club Ren 96 when he won the men’s 17/18 years 100m backstroke in 58.79.

In her first Nationals Achieng Ajulu-Bushell (Plymouth Leander) won the girls 14/15 years 100m freestyle in 58.40. Ajulu-Bushell is a Manchester born, British National who lived in South Africa for four years before moving to Plymouth last September to enrol on the college scholarship programme. “I swam when I lived in South Africa but I wanted to do my GCSEs in the UK so my parents and I looked around a number of swim colleges.” She went on to say “Plymouth has been a complete change for me but I love it, the coaches are really helpful and the atmosphere is amazing, it has been a great choice.”

There was 0.02 seconds between first and second place in the women’s 16/17 years 200m butterfly final, which also saw six swimmers finish between 57 and 58 seconds. Beckenham swimmer Liesje Van Der Velde won with a pb in 57.08 from Lauren Collins (City of Birmingham).

The city of Sheffield club won their second medal gold of the Championships. Today their victor was Braxton Timm who won the men’s 15/16 years 200m butterfly with a two sec pb, “I wanted a medal” he said “I was aware of Thomas Allen finishing fast, I knew he would, he always does”. Timm’s managed to pip Allen by 0.49 seconds to win in 2:04.01.

A noisy Stockport Metro club cheered their swimmer Daniel Vickers into the lead in the men’s 17/18 years 200m fly, where he won by a body length in 2:01.90. After the race he said “I could hear them [Stockport Metro team-mates] cheering and making a noise on my final turn which was inspiring and made a big difference.”

In the multi-discipline events, paralympian’s Sean Fraser (Warrender) and Elizabeth Simpkin (Southport) showed their promise with Fraser breaking British records in the men’s 50m freestyle and Simpkin breaking the British and European record in a very closely fought women’s 100m butterfly. Simpkin, whose first major international will be in the Paralympic Games in Beijing, was pushed by her Great Britain teammates Claire Cashmore (Kelly College) and Stephanie Millward (Swansea) but she finished with a strong last 50m to win in 1:13.21. “I went as hard as I could and it worked out” noting that she was still in heavy training Simpkin said “its scary to break the records when I’m in this heavy phase of training”. With her sights set on the Paralympics in 39 days time, with a smile on her face, Simpkin said “I have goals but I’m keeping them a secret.”

The final event of the day was the women’s open 4x100m relay, which saw Ealing win (3:51.69), whilst Millfield School and City of Newcastle battled it out for second and third. Millfield finished in second in 3:56.35 and Newcastle in third in 3:56.83.

Britain’s young swimmers have impressed on the first day of the European Junior Swimming Championships in Belgrade, clinching three medals, including a Gold for 15-year-old Anne Bochmann in the 400IM.

UAE City of Norwich swimmer Bochmann swam just outside her personal best, finishing in 4:46.58 in her first time competing in open air swimming. She led throughout the final and touched home almost two seconds ahead of Alexandra Musienko from Russia and Karlina Nika Petric from Slovenia.

A silver medal went to James Doolan in the 50m Fly in a time of 24.58. City of Salford swimmer Doolan could not overhaul the impressive Serbian Ivan Lendjer, who had set a new championship record in the semi finals and went into the final with a confidence that proved founded as he touched home in 24.17.

Xavier Mohammed took the Bronze medal in the 400m Freestyle in a personal best time of 3:54.21. Mohammed had set a new PB to make it to the final but was able to improve on that time again in the final to come home with a medal, behind winner Pal Joensen of Faroes and Alex Di Giorgio of Italy.

The Boys 4x100 freestyle relay team also impressed, swimming 3:21.11, the fastest ever time of any British Junior team. Despite swimming two seconds faster than their time at the World Junior Swimming Championship in Mexico earlier this month, the same quartet were unable to make it into medals and they touched in fourth place with the Gold going to Germany in a EJC Record time of 3:19.26.

Dave Champion, head coach, said: “This is the first time any of these swimmers had competed in a heat, semi and final all in one day so it is really impressive to have come away with the medals and results we have.”

Full results are available on the European Junior Championship website.

The small team of British athletes competing in the US Open Meet in Minnesota, just missed out on claiming a medal on the first day of competition.

Joe Roebuck qualified third for the 200m Butterfly but his final time of 1.58.23 although a second faster than his qualifying time put him in fourth position 0.57 seconds behind American bronze medallist Mark Dylla. The American team also took gold and silver, with Hidemasa Sano securing silver in 1:56.41 and Bobby Bollier winning the race in 1:55.67.

Richard Webb also made it through to the finals in the 200m Breaststroke, although his finishing time of 2:15.92 put him in seventh position. Americans Scott Usher stole gold in 2:10.67, John Criste took the silver with a time of 2:11.46 and bronze went to Sean Mahoney who completed the race in 2:12.57.

In the women’s 200m Butterfly Terri Duning qualified for the B final, but her race time of 2:15.09 landed her in sixth position. America however stormed through again to take gold - Mary Descenza, 2:07.26, silver - Lyndsa De Paul, 2:09.66 and bronze - Ava Ohlgren 2:11.32.

Georgia Holderness went 2.35.37 in the 200m Breaststroke, but again she did not challenge the victorious Americans. Laura Sogar secured the gold in 2:27.38, Keri Hehn took the silver with a time of 2:27.60 and bronze went to Katy Freeman who completed the final in 2:28.74.

Team Manager Dorothy Smith is hopeful for better results in the next day of the competition.

“We only had four swimmers competing on the first day and they were obviously disappointed at not being placed.

“We have a lot more athletes swimming on the second day, so fingers crossed.”

Open entry for the Great North Swim - the first mass participation, one mile open water swim in the UK – is now full.

Race entries for the event at Lake Windermere on 13th September 2008 were due to close one month before the swim but the event has proved so popular that maximum numbers have been reached ahead of time.

However, people can still take part if they are quick by securing one of the charity places available with the Swim’s charity partner the British Red Cross or by checking some of the organisations with guaranteed places on the Great North Swim website.

The swim is fully endorsed by the asa and full health and safety protocol will be observed during the event. Representatives from the asa will be in attendance, with some taking part in the swim. Staff will be available in the asa marquee throughout the day.

The event will include elite swimmers such as Mark Foster, Alan Bircher, David Davies, Cassie Patten, Keri-Ann Payne and Joanne Jackson. Also taking part will be other well-known names, those swimming for charity and those just for fun.

Lifelong Participation Officer for the asa, Nuala Muir-Cochrane said: “We are delighted that the Great North Swim has captured the imagination of the public and that so many people have signed up to take part. I will be participating in the swim myself and I’m sure it’s going to be a fantastic event and lots of fun!”
